Yorkshire Dragons II Complete Perfect 14–0 Season as NBL Division Three Champions
The Yorkshire Dragons II team have completed their inaugural season as (14-0) undefeated champions of National Basketball League (NBL) Division Three Men – Pool B. The team came together last summer following the first team’s movement from NBL Division One to the newly developed British Championship Basketball league.
Former assistant coach of the first team, Michal Puszynski, took over the helm as head coach of Yorkshire Dragons II. The personnel were made up of veterans of the NBL along with local up-and-coming talent. Familiar faces included 15+ year Dragons’ legend Rihards Sulcs along with 10+ year veteran Ricky Fetske. The team was buoyed by the leadership and defensive acumen of Vance Silcott and the mid-season acquisition of 10-year Dragon vet Jermayne Laing.
The team trained hard twice a week in competitive sessions, providing opportunities for members of the Dragons’ Junior team to get involved. Additionally, the Dragons II team and BCB Dragons team would routinely scrimmage each other, putting credence to the club’s motto One Club One Family.
Some major achievements this season include making it to the fourth round of the Men’s National Cup. Along the way, Dragons II competed in a local derby with West Yorkshire Hawks and away at Division Two Men – Pool A champions Tees Valley Mohawks, walking away victorious in each of those matches. Suffering their only defeat of the season, Dragons II would lose to the eventual finalists of the competition, NBL Division One side Manchester Magic by 4 points.
Notable individual accolades go to Rihards Sulcs (32.6 ppg) and Ricky Fetske (29.6 ppg) leading the way in scoring in Division Three Men and sharing the captaincy duties over the course of the season.
Yorkshire Dragons II captured the highest seed possible going into the NBL2 Promotional Playoffs as the NBL 3 winner with the highest percentage of wins and highest points difference per game. The aggregate score of a home and away fixture vs Stockport Basketball Club separates the Dragons II from promotion into NBL Division Two.
The details of the upcoming playoff games are yet to be determined but please watch this space as we look towards the opportunity for promotion.
