Ronney Ani: Stepping Into His First BCB Season With Energy and Purpose

As Yorkshire Dragons continue to build momentum this season, one of the youngest players of the squad is beginning to emerge with confidence.

Ronney Ani, who recently graduated from the Manchester Magic Academy, is stepping into his first professional-level season in the BCB with maturity, intensity, and a strong desire to grow. Last weekend, he delivered a breakout performance — earning MVP honours in the Dragons’ home game against the Bristol Flyers.

“It’s been great,” Ronney says about the transition. “Playing against the next talent has been really good. I’m enjoying it. It’s a new challenge every day, and I’m just very grateful to be here.”

Adjusting to Professional-Level Basketball
Entering a league known for its pace and physicality, Ronney has welcomed the challenge with enthusiasm. “It’s really good, and I’m really enjoying it. It’s very challenging, and I’m someone who wants to keep getting better in my life, so I’m glad to be in a competitive league like this.” His performance against Bristol showed exactly how well he has adapted, bringing constant effort on both ends of the floor.

Finding His Place With the Dragons
Joining a roster filled with experienced and well-travelled players could be a big step, but Ronney has found the environment supportive and energising.

“Everybody’s really nice, and we’re all from different places,” he says. “A lot of these guys have been playing pro their whole lives for years, so it’s really good to get more knowledge from them. Everybody’s been great.”

The influence of his teammates is already visible in his composure and positioning during games.

A Game Built on Energy
When asked how he would describe his identity on court, Ronney answers with the same clarity he plays with. “I’m a big energy guy. I love to play defence and get right back. I try to be a constant motor on both offence and defence. I always want to put the team first, and I really love winning.”

That motor was key in the win against the Bristol Flyers, where his activity sparked momentum and lifted the whole team.

Lessons That Travel With Him
From his time at the Magic Academy to the demands of professional-level competition, Ronney continues to rely on core habits that keep him grounded. “Stay confident in yourself,” he says. “Be confident in the work you put in throughout the summer and throughout your whole life. If you stay confident, you stay true to yourself, and you’ll always play your best.” This approach helps him navigate every new challenge with stability and purpose.

While some players rely on a single mentor, Ronney draws inspiration from the entire roster. “To be honest, all of them,” he says. “I like to take bits and pieces from every player I see. I want to understand why they play, why they get minutes. Everybody has been a mentor, especially the coaches.” This open and curious mindset is shaping him into a player who learns quickly and adapts even faster.

A Young Player With Clear Goals
Despite being in his first professional season, Ronney’s goals reflect maturity and team awareness. “I want to be a big contributor to the team,” he says. “Starting off as a young guy, you have to earn your minutes, but I understand the game. I want to keep contributing more and more to the team winning as much as I can.”

A Message to the Fans
Ronney ends with gratitude for the support he has felt throughout the season. “Keep coming and keep supporting like you did today. You’ll see plenty more great games like this throughout the year. Just keep coming, keep supporting, and make sure you’re there for the finals in March for the Cup.”
