Jordan Whelan on Building a New Identity with Yorkshire Dragons

This season marks a fresh chapter for the club as the Bradford Dragons officially became the Yorkshire Dragons. Few players understand this transformation better than Jordan Whelan, who has spent the past three years with the team and witnessed both the challenges and the growth along the way.

A Rebrand at the Right Time
For Jordan, the shift to Yorkshire Dragons came at a perfect moment. “It’s nice to have something really fresh. It was needed,” he said. “We’ve got a great group of guys, a new coach, and Chris is still here supporting as assistant. The energy has been great and practices have been strong. Everything has fallen into place.”

He sees the rebrand not just as a change of name, but as an opportunity to redefine who the Dragons are. “We’re creating the new identity right now. We’ve got a strong fan base and academy presence in Yorkshire. It’s about embracing that, playing for the fans and the local community, and building something new.”

Experience Across the Basketball World
Jordan’s journey spans England, the United States, and Germany, giving him a deep understanding of how basketball culture differs across the world. “Growing up in Warrington, it was just me and my brother playing basketball. The culture here has grown, but it still needs to grow more,” he explained. “Germany and the US have role models and strong systems — basketball is second nature to them. For us, it’s about inspiring the kids who come to our games and building that culture in the community.”

Finding a Home with the Dragons
After spending time in the BBL with Worcester, London, and Manchester, Jordan made the move to Bradford. It was a choice that came from both basketball and his life off the court. For him, it wasn’t only about basketball. It was simply the decision that made the most sense at that point in his life. “It wasn’t a basketball transition, it was a life decision. This league allowed me to balance basketball with my off-court work. Bradford became a new home for me. I’ve been really happy here and just try to help the programme and be a role model.”

Growth Since the Rebrand
Jordan highlighted the clear improvements since the club became Yorkshire Dragons, from the new kits and colours to expanded support off the court. “But the biggest thing is definitely the fans. Last season was disappointing, so we knew we had to win the community back. The atmosphere this year has been amazing. It makes a real difference.”

Leadership and Development
Having played at higher professional levels, Jordan naturally embraced a leadership role when he first joined the team. This season, with the addition of several experienced players, that role has evolved. “We all want to contribute and lead. And we’ve got young players like Ronney coming through. Sharing knowledge is a big part of our identity.”

A Moment to Remember
His standout memory? The national cup final two seasons ago. “It was huge. The first national final the club had ever made. And now we’ve made another final this season. We’re really happy to be back and hopefully we can get over the line.”

Looking Ahead
Jordan’s goals for this season are clear: “Win games. As many as possible. We’ve shown we have a team capable of winning a championship. It starts with the cup, then we push in the league.”

He also had a message for Dragons fans. “Keep coming and supporting. The atmosphere you create is amazing. For the national cup final, fill the gym for us. Hopefully we can bring a championship home.”
