Jack Mielke begins a new chapter across the Atlantic
This season represents a major milestone for American forward Jack Mielke, who made the bold decision to leave the United States and begin his professional basketball journey here in England. In his first year with the Yorkshire Dragons, and his first year as a pro, Jack reflects on the transition, the growth, and the moments that have shaped his debut season.
A Leap Into the Unknown
For Jack, choosing the UK as his first professional destination wasn’t the typical route, but it was the right one. “Everyone here has been super welcoming, super open, super warm,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of great guys on the team, a lot of experienced players I can learn from. It’s been a really great experience.”
Moving to a new country meant navigating life far from home while adjusting to a different style of basketball. New systems, new teammates, new expectations, but Jack embraced the challenge with maturity.
Fitting Into the Dragons’ Identity
Before arriving, Jack already believed in this team’s potential. “After talking to Paul, I felt like we had a chance to have a great year and win a lot of games,” he said. “And that’s exactly what we’re doing.”
Jack’s role as a stretch four fits seamlessly into Coach Paul’s fast-paced system, quick decisions, spacing the floor, and taking smart shots. “I can really shoot it,” he said. “So coming in, spacing the floor, shooting, and attacking when defenders close out poorly, trying to be aggressive, that’s what I focus on.”
Growing Under Experienced Leadership
For a rookie, being surrounded by seasoned professionals has accelerated his development. “Guys like Jordan, Corey, David, Nick, Logan, they’ve been in this league or higher leagues for a long time,” Jack said. “I’ve learned the nuances of the game from them: adjusting to defences, making better reads, changing plays on the fly. All those little things.”
These lessons have shaped not just his performance but his confidence and approach to the pro game.
A Defining Moment on the Road
When asked about standout moments this season, Jack didn’t hesitate, and it wasn’t a highlight play. “The Falkirk game,” he said. “We had a miserable travel experience. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong. But we pushed past it, went into a hostile environment, and won.”
For Jack, that game reflected the team’s character, resilience, unity, and the ability to compete no matter the circumstances. “It was one of our toughest, most impressive wins of the season.”
A Dream Years in the Making
Jack’s motivation to begin his career overseas comes from a deep-rooted love for the game. “I’ve loved basketball since I was young,” he said. “When I got the chance to come here and make this my job, it wasn’t something I could turn down.”
That passion fuels his mindset day to day, taking each step with patience, discipline, and purpose.
Growing Into the Professional Game
Looking back on the season so far, Jack is proud of his growth. “Becoming more aggressive, learning the role, adjusting to life here, I think I’ve done a good job of that,” he said. “Just taking it day by day and step by step.”
He wants to continue expanding his scoring game beyond his shooting ability. “I’m looking to attack more off the dribble and be stronger inside,” he added.
What’s Next
Jack’s first professional season has been about far more than basketball. It has been about courage, adaptability, and proving to himself that he belongs at this level.
A new country, a new league, and a new chapter, and he’s embracing every moment of the journey.
