Doing the Little Things Right – David Ulph’s Impact at the Dragons
For David Ulph, basketball has never just been about numbers on a score sheet. It has always been about doing the little things right, playing the game the right way, and enjoying every moment on the floor.
Now in his first season with the Yorkshire Dragons, the experienced big man has quickly become a key presence both on and off the court.
A New Chapter with the Dragons
Joining the Dragons this season was a decision rooted in people and principles. “What attracted me was some of the players who were coming here and the coach, Paul,” David explains. “I’ve known Chris for a long time from playing against him when I was younger, and everyone involved has great principles.”
At this stage of his career, enjoyment matters just as much as competition. “I’m getting a bit older now, so I just want to play and have fun,” he says. “I’ve taken on the captain role, which is another challenge for me, but I really enjoy it. I just want to play, have fun, and lead the right way.”
Team Culture and Togetherness
After several months with the club, David speaks highly of the environment he has joined. “I really like this team,” he says. “Everyone’s selfless. We all play as a team, everyone wants to win, and everyone wants to play the right way. That’s imperative at this level of basketball.”
That mindset showed early in the season, with the Dragons putting together a strong run before suffering their first home defeat. “We’ll bounce back,” David adds confidently. “There’s great camaraderie here and a great group of guys. If we stay locked in and stay together, I really believe we can achieve success this year.”
Lessons from the Top Level
David brings with him years of experience at the highest level of British basketball, including time with Cheshire Phoenix and Manchester Giants. Those seasons shaped the way he now approaches the game. “It’s given me a lot of self-belief, confidence, and experience,” he says. “I’ve played against a lot of talented players over the years. The biggest things for me now are IQ, experience, and staying level-headed.”
That experience has also made him a mentor. “I used to be one of the younger guys,” David reflects. “Now I try to help them as much as I can, make the right plays at the right time, and help us improve week by week.”
Championship Mentality
Winning the BBL Trophy with Cheshire Phoenix and earning a place in the All-British Starting Five were standout moments in his career, but David focuses less on individual recognition and more on collective habits. “Everyone was selfless. Everyone wanted to play the right way,” he says. “And look where it got us.”
It is a standard he hopes the Dragons can continue to build toward. “If we play that way consistently, we can do good things,” he adds. “I compare that experience a lot to what we’re building here.”
Doing the Little Things
Known for his relentless rebounding, physical defence, and efficient finishing around the rim, David keeps his approach simple. “I just try to do the little things well,” he says. “If you do that, you put yourself in a good position to be a good player.”
Rebounding, he explains, is about effort and impact. “Giving our team another chance to score, or stopping the other team from scoring, is huge. I’ve played this way since I started at 16, and I’ll keep doing it.”
Now 32, David’s journey has been anything but conventional. Starting basketball relatively late, he turned professional at 19 in England and has played ever since. “I still really enjoy it,” he says. “It’s a passion of mine, and I’ll play for as long as I can.”
Goals for the Season
David is honest about his personal ambitions. “I want to push for MVP of the league,” he says. “Finish with an average double-double, be one of the top rebounders.”
But his priorities as captain are clear. “For the team, it’s about making sure everyone’s having fun, everyone feels like they have a purpose, and everyone feels wanted,” he explains. “If we stick together and enjoy it, that’s what matters most to me.”
A Message to Dragons Fans
David finished with a heartfelt message to the Dragons supporters. “Thank you for coming and supporting us,” he says. “Please keep coming. You’re the sixth player out there for us, and you’re massive.”
